Daily Mail(West Virginia), April 03 2004 Midori
is a world-class violinist who works her way up and down the strings of
this recent Adams' work of stunning difficulty. Her performance with the
West Virginia Symphony Orchestra Friday night was intense. ... Midori is fiendish in her playing; she is very physical in her interpretation and yet makes much of the playing look effortless. ... At the top of the piece she played for five minutes with the orchestra before there was at least a half rest on her part. In the second very lyrical movement, she softly tiptoed on the uppermost notes of the violin in perfect balance with the rest of the orchestra. In the third movement, there was a flurry of activity in all sections, and Midori was there musically to lead the way. She is a take-charge soloist, though just over the age of 30 and barely a size 2 (if I had to guess). Her strength and stamina are remarkable and an inspiration whether she is playing a lyrical line or climbing her way up the fret board at the speed of light. It is not surprising that she chose the Adams' work as her feature piece for this season. |
