Midori delivered a
performance ... defined by enormous focus, technical facility, and potent,
highly individual artistry.
Her program with pianist Robert McDonald revealed many diverse aspects
of her musical personality while suggesting demurely that the complete
Midori encompasses an even wider spectrum. ...
The greatest
display of the violinist's technical prowess came in Ravel's G major Sonata
for Violin and Piano. Particularly impressive were long notes held without
the slightest hint of deterioration and forceful crescendos on single
pitches. Most engaging of all was the Blues section. Physically and emotionally
absorbed in the spirit of the piece, Midori relished its many dips and
curves, applying sensuality to the slides and strumming or plucking her
violin as if it were a bass guitar.
