"Schnittke's first work for violin seemed not like a modernistic fig-leaf, here; from the beginning it was a battle of life, truth and truthfulness.(...) It was preceded by a Beethoven Sonata, which Midori and her piano partner McDonald performed in traditional classical and technical perfection. That this classical interpretation was followed by a Schnittke that didn't sound 'mainstream' at all was a very pleasant surprise."
