Midori was sensational, attacking the [Beethoven Violin Concerto] with confidence and style. The memorable violin entrance was warm and inviting. An experienced professional violinist himself, Gilbert let Midori linger on the soft trills and pianissimo sections -- the degree of quiet in the huge hall was remarkable.

After the jovial final movement, Midori was given an immediate and nearly unanimous standing ovation.

She showed that Beethoven's violin concerto is still fresh and meaningful, nearly 200 years after its premiere. ... Will it still be so in another 200 years? ...

Leaving the hall Wednesday, it was tough to imagine otherwise.
