As we enter the season of year-end festivities, it is also time for each of us to reflect on so many happenings around the world. Technological advances make it possible to see images and to hear sounds from faraway places – still, in the comfort of our usual surroundings, we often neglect to dig deeply, to fully understand and consider the vast consequences of the world’s many dramas.
Music making has formed the core of my life. Caught up in life’s whirlwind, I study and explore music, while realizing that it can be so easy, at times, to merely go through my paces, following convention. While I pay attention to the surface details, I must remember that there is something more, the force of real life, animating so many markings on a page. Where are the paths before me where I can discover the kinds of connections that can foster deep personal bonds between music and our world?
In this season’s celebratory bustle, my goal is to explore my richest connections with all the world’s offerings. I find that when I delve into my repertoire, if I do so honestly, I am also engaging with life, forging my own unique way through this world, sharing music, its beauties and insights, with so many fellow travelers. I encourage you, my fellows, to your own explorations, your own connections, as every personal road carries us all together on a universal journey, each day’s happenings enriched by each day’s potential recognitions and accomplishments. May the giving and receiving of the holiday season inspire each of us, in all our endeavors, to share all we have learned, our blessings, with the world!
With best wishes,
